Our Story

Our Story Where it all began. Based in the beautiful Lake District, we hand pick most of our products from a 30 mile radius of home. We started this business because we simply have a love of cheese Best of all, that brilliant informal experience of grazing our favourites and with a glass of wine – just chatting and picking… In fact, Mr Bleasdale and I really love our ‘Picky Teas!.. It all started with our Christmas Night tradition – after a day full of excitement, the children in bed, we would (& still do!) relax and enjoy an abundance of cheese in front of the Christmas Specials on telly. With many years experience in catering and a passion for local food, we knew we could help customers recreate that magical experience where they are.

However, buying cheese for our ‘Cheesemas’ Feast was always costly and sometimes wasteful, so the idea of a ready made Cheese Feast for two (or more was born). Everything you need for a stunning cheese & nibbles board delivered straight to your door – at any time of year, for any occasion! Our Cafe in Ulverston, which we ran for 13 years, was always a place where people met and became friends over a coffee. We introduced our love of cheese to our customers, replacing the Afternoon Tea (I’m not a fan!! with a new Afternoon Cheese. We turned the Afternoon Cheese into an occasion with beautiful mini shelves of cheese made from reclaimed wood, bringing together all our catering experience for something new. The Afternoon Cheese was extremely popular. Our customers loved the fact they could sit together and spend time chatting and indulging in various Local cheeses with a glass of their favourite tipple.

After the few years we’ve had, we realised that we needed to refocus & cater for customers at home. We looked into ways of giving our customers the Afternoon Cheese Experience at home. We sourced some hard wearing Kraft Boxes as well as developing our extra special LA12 wooden display box and started to evolve different Cheesy ideas for our box delivery service. We now cater for Mothers day, Fathers Day, Christmas Boxes and Valentines and our popular vegetarian version too – but the firm favourite is still the Afternoon Cheese Box.

It turns out that lots of you are looking for an alternative to sending flowers or chocolates as gifts too. The boxes of all descriptions are now travelling far & wide, providing the ideal Picky Tea or beautiful board for guests all with a personalised message,

Oh, and I should also say – why the name! The Box speaks for itself – a beautifully wrapped box full of savoury treats & cheese plus our very own postcode, LA12, where it all began.
Thanks for reading our story and do get in touch if you have any cheesy ideas that we could create into a new box from The Box LA12.
